Free Performance Poetry workshops for students - 07.09.11, 10:00am

FREE Performance Poetry workshops for students Wed 7 – Fri 9 Sep

Discover the art of creating performance poetry in a hands-on, words-on workshop specially designed for secondary and upper primary school students. SlammED! culminates in an electric live poetry slam where participants take their new-found skills to the stage. Poetry slams have proven to be a successful educational tool and creative process for children and young people, encouraging free expression in both writing and performance, helping students to find and develop their own voice and promoting literacy and poetry in an immediate and accessible form. Each workshop will include:

  • Writing and editing poetry for stage
  • The sound of slam - rhythm and rhyme
  • Waking up and keeping the audience alive
  • Developing performance and stage techniques.

David ‘Ghostboy’ Stavanger and Pascalle Burton lead the day’s activities of ‘page to stage’ performance fun. David is a former Performance Poetry World Cup holder and Queensland’s premier performance poet and slammaster. Pascalle is a teacher of English and Performing Arts, winner at the inaugural 2006 Queensland Poetry Festival and has published her first poetry collection A Vast Laugh.
